The AV industry is always evolving so constant education and growth is of the utmost importance.  We wanted to share the story of a Buffalo, NY based Nationwide University alumni and freelance video engineer Nick Cummings.

NW: Nick, thank you for joining us. Can you start by telling us a bit about yourself and your background in the AV industry?

Nick Cummings: Hello, it’s great to be here. I’m Nick Cummings, and I’ve been immersed in the AV industry for quite a while. I’m based in Buffalo, NY, and I consider myself a video jack of all trades. While I’m skilled in various aspects of video engineering, my specialties lie in Projection, Media Servers, and Image Processors, particularly E2. Though I’ve spent many years in the AV space, it’s only been within the past year that I’ve ventured into freelancing.

NW: That’s impressive, Nick. Could you share some highlights from your recent experiences in the field?

Nick Cummings: Certainly. One of the most notable experiences was my involvement in the Tipping Point II Tour for Tears for Fears. I served as the Disguise Op and Projectionist for that tour, and it was an incredible experience. The crew I worked alongside were fantastic, and the entire tour left me with so much valuable knowledge.

NW: We were really excited to hear that you got that amazing opportunity. Can you share a little bit about how you got that opportunity?

Nick Cummings: Absolutely. I owe a significant part of my skills and success to Kevin Ring at Nationwide University. He was the one who introduced me to the world of disguise media servers, and his guidance provided me with the necessary tools to excel on the Tipping Point II Tour. Specifically, the projection elements of Disguise that Kevin taught me were incredibly beneficial for the role I was in.

NW: That’s wonderful to hear. Education plays a crucial role in this field. Could you share a bit about your experience at Nationwide University?

Nick Cummings: Nationwide University has been a game-changer for me. I’ve taken six courses at this point. The classes have been immensely valuable in honing my skills and knowledge. Kevin Ring’s teaching style is highly engaging, and he ensures that his students not only grasp the material but also get plenty of hands-on practice. After completing a course with him, I leave with a strong command of the skillset, which empowers me to confidently book gigs right away.

NW: Can you tell us about how the courses at Nationwide University have helped with your technical skillset?

Nick Cummings: The courses I’ve taken at Nationwide University with Kevin have significantly boosted my skillset. This, in turn, has led to a marked improvement in my career. I’m now more well-rounded and capable of taking on diverse roles. As a result, my bookings have increased, and I’m finding more opportunities in the industry.

NW: Lastly, Nick, what advice would you offer to fellow video engineers looking to enhance their skills and advance their careers?

Nick Cummings: If you’re a video engineer aiming to elevate your game, I wholeheartedly recommend booking a class with Kevin Ring at Nationwide University. The hands-on experience and thorough understanding you gain from his courses are truly invaluable. Investing in education and continuous learning is a surefire way to excel in this industry.
